Jackson County Board of Education Adopts Dress Code Policy

According to the Jackson County School Board's Student Dress and Appearance Policy, the Board has the responsibility to maintain an appropriate atmosphere conducive to learning.  All students are expected to dress neatly and in a manner that is appropriate and reflects self-respect and decency.  Teachers should model the dress code by example.

The following are items of clothing or fashion which will not be worn in Jackson County Schools:

1.  Hats, stocking caps, bandanans, scarves, hairnets, and sunglasses.  Exceptions are protective hats or headgear for career technical classes.

2.  Distracting hairstyles or makeup.  Hair must be neat, clean and of length that the eyes are visible.  Hair dyed unnatural (green, blue, orange, purple) or unnaturally colored makeup (black, purple, etc) is not acceptable.

3.  Shirt and shoes should be worn at all times and all clothing must be modest and unoffensive (must not expose anatomy).  This includes the following:  Sleeveless dresses, shirts, or skirts which reveal undergarments or are shorter than mid-thigh when seated; tie up blouses or pants; pants with huge legs or pants that reveal undergarments (pants must cover the pelvic girdle); clothes that bare the midriff; halter, cropped, or tube tops, tank tops or muscle shirts; fish net or see through clothing of any type.

4.  Clothing with writing across the buttocks.

5.  Clothing or personal items with vulgar, obscene or controversial wording or pictures.  This includes clothing depicting alcohol, drugs, tobacco, death, or sexual messages or innuendoes.

6.  Long overcoats (trench coats)

7.  Body piercing jewelry (with the exception of earrings); chains or jewelry that could be deemed dangerous.

8.  Pajamas or house shoes

9.  Offensive tattoos or body art must be covered at all times.

10.  No shoes with rollers or made for rollers.  No toeless shoes in career technical classes.
